The 2026 Tax Shake-up: Why Your \"Once-a-Year\" Routine is Changing

If you’ve always treated your tax return like a January "sprint" (complete with a shoebox of receipts and a lot of caffeine), I have some news. HMRC is changing the rules.

From 6 April 2026, a new system called Making Tax Digital (MTD) is arriving. If you're a self-employed founder earning over £50,000, the old way of filing once a year is disappearing. Instead, HMRC wants a "digital check-in" every three months.

What does this actually mean for you?

  • No more January panics: You’ll send small, digital updates four times a year.

  • Bye-bye spreadsheets: You’ll need to use software (like FreeAgent) to keep your records.

  • Total clarity: You’ll know exactly what you owe as you go, rather than getting a surprise bill 10 months later.

It sounds like more work, but it’s actually a huge win for your sanity. In the Anchor to Scale Collective, we take care of the tech and the timing so you can keep doing what you love while I handle the HMRC "chatter."
